From an avid lover of sports, to a well nurtured player, I transformed myself into a disciplined & committed Handball Coach. I’ve picked up all my skills and expertise to uplift the quality of sports in the country.
I will take you through my journey :Ramakanth Mekala.
My Early Life
I was born and brought up at small place called Kavadiguda, located in Hyderabad district of Telangana. My father was a government employee in educational department and my mother is a housewife.
My father was the sole bread earner of the family and at the early stage, I started to feel responsibilities on my shoulders. Being born in a middle class family with no sports background, I was always forced to study to get a white collar job.
My Sports Journey
My inclination towards sports developed when my friends used to participate in various games at school level and later I also joined them. I started participating in various sports events at school level for fun.
It was the time when one of my close friend started going to a handball coaching center and asked me to accompany him. Till then I was never serious about taking professional training.
I joined the coaching and found the game very exciting and developed a very special interest towards it.
I have played a lot in my teenage under the guidance of my coach Alexander whom I consider as my god father. He was the man who always motivated me to perform best in every game. I generally used to play at the left wing for my team.
I played my first handball tournament in year 2004 for School Games Federation in sub junior category. Later, I played several tournaments but never got any recognitions.
In year 2008, after 4 years of hard work, I got a chance to play in senior inter district championship. I was the youngest among my team members and earned the much needed experiences and memorable moments.
Career as A Coach
I got retired after playing for 8 years. But coaching young talent was next on my agenda so I started my career as a handball coach. I believe that sportsman never gets retired.
In year 2012 I got an opportunity as assistant coach for Rangareddy district girls team.
Later, I did Bachelor of Physical Education and also did a short time course in sports from NIS-Mumbai which enhanced my knowledge towards the game.
In 2013, I started as a coach & physical teacher at Maharshi Vidya Mandir School, Kondapur in Hyderabad. I took charge to prepare girls & boys teams for CBSE South Zone competition. Both of our teams entered quarter finals for the first time but unfortunately lost in finals.
In 2014, I got opportunity to work as a coach for junior girls Inter-district championship, Kammam Under 19. Our Rangareddy team got 4th place and a girl from the same team got selected for Nationals.
Turning point of my coaching career
I started coaching at my school, Maharshi Vidya Mandir team once again for CBSE south zone championship in quest of a better spot.
We created history by winning the south zone championship held at Selam, Tamil Nadu for the first time. It was for the first time in the history of Hyderabad that any school won CBSE South Zone Championship.
After winning the championship, our team qualified for CBSE Nationals too. It turned out to be a memorable and turning point in my coaching career.
Same year, Alexander sir supported me in getting a spot in one of Hyderabad’s elite sports stadium. I started training there too. The boys and girls team played senior Inter district and SGF U-19 games and girls got selected for Sports Authority of India- Gachibowli.
The following year went fruitful as our Rangareddy team got second place in Telangana U-19 in junior girls category which was held at Warangal and third place at senior woman Inter-district championship held at Adilabad.
In the same year, one of my student got selected for All India Sports Authority of India girls team sub junior U-15 category. She represented sub junior nationals. We have got one bronze medal in U-15 category and one medal in U-17 category.
Best achievements for me is when my students get recognized at high level. Best part of my journey :Ramakanth Mekala
I believe that girls or women need a strong motivation to take sports as a career option. There is no support from their families and society. I just want to change this scenario and take this responsibility to encourage girls to participate in sports and to groom them to next level.
I follow a simple diet chart for keeping myself sturdy and fit. A sportsman should maintain a proper diet plan if he is eager to achieve something.
My Present Students
Currently I am providing coaching to a batch of 40 girl students at St. Philomena High School. The energy and enthusiasm of these students will surely land them in notable positions in sports at National and International level.
Views on Current Situation of Sports in India
Lacks of proper infrastructure, guidance & support are the major concerns for Indian sports. I hope Government will extend their support for the growth of sports in India
As a coach I want to introduce Handball in maximum schools and aiming for a wide and extensive development of this game in Hyderabad city and later at different states.
