I, Satish Chandra Saxena, will take you through My Running Journey and experiences of sports.
मैराथन आसान ,भरोसा हो क़दमों की ताल का साथ तुम्हारे दौड़ रहा है,बुड्ढा तिरेसठ साल का !
Early Part and the start-
Three years ago, I got retired from the post of Assistant Engineer from CPWD. I was above the danger mark according to the BMI Index and my body was accustomed to the air-conditioned atmosphere. I had to take breaks while climbing office stairs and walking mere 500 meters looked impossible for me.
My boss always use to walk to the next office building. Looking him I wondered that why he is not using even a 3-wheeler to commute.
Then one day over a casual discussion related to health and fitness, he said that we must do some physical activities otherwise it will not take long for our bodies to give up both physically and mentally. This sentence made me analyse myself that where am I standing in terms of health perspective . My deteriorated health came as a wake up call and made me to take up resolution to improve my body composition and strive towards an healthy lifestyle.
Aging came fast when you are inactive in your life . Soon I met with a life changing experience while trying to lift an empty cylinder of cooking gas in which I suffered a ligament tear in my right hand. For the first time at the age of 50, I felt that I was no longer a young man and started thinking about this. At that time, the stamina was 70 years old and I could feel it when my heart felt pressure just after climbing few steps.
The beginning of my journey was solely based on self motivation as I started running slowly for 1 minute. Gradually, after few days, I started to run slowly for about 200 meters and then I used to walk the next 100 -200 meters .
Within two months, the clogged artery of the heart began to feel like it started again; my gasp begin to improve over time and the BP was well in control. Achieving all this was not less than challenge and same time a gift for a lazy person like me. But for me the question was to take the challenge of rejuvenation at the age of 61 and never accept defeat from now on. I pledged to myself that I will leave a new example for the children of my family highlighting them the importance of health and fitness, nutrition & diet.
My First Half Marathon
Two months later, I filled the form of HDFC Bank Millennium City Marathon (21 km) and announced it publicly. To save my pride, I decided to run the Half Marathon.
In the next 4 months, with all my confidence, it was easy to achieve the medals in 3 Half Marathon . I felt amazing after achieving what I was determined to get during the past year, that too only in 8 months of hard work.
I believed that my body is powerful and will cure itself without any external help. I started running alone , I expressed myself and often clicked photos while running for posting it on social media. I didn’t worry about what people will say but it rather kept me motivated and this became the reason for me to keep pushing myself.
The feeling always remained in the mind ,that I can do it. Don’t ever think about your age,never be afraid of death as it is unpredictable , so enjoy every moment as the last has always been my motto.
It will be hard for all of you to believe that I have completed 4000 Km in the last two and a half years, including 22 Half Marathons (21 km). Even after this, I do not consider myself to be the best runner because I still do many basic mistakes while running. For the new runners of my age,I want to share that please do not hurry with your body which has got stiff over the years.
Rejuvenationcannot happen in one day, body muscles will tear if you try to force them. They may get injured and you may suffer a lot of pain for a long time. People often make mistakes in first few years of running, due to which there is a danger of getting different types of pain or even lifetime injury .
My Advice for running to new runners which they should keep in mind –
Expensive shoes are not always preferable ,rather they must be comfortable and of good fitting .
Running is a High Impact exercise for your body in which every step falling on your body weight is weighed three times in comparison to your body weight. So if you are overweight then it can be dangerous if you start rushing towards your goals.
It is necessary to prepare your muscles for high impact exercises before running, so that they can bear the impact. For this to happen it is important that you intermix running and walking for first few weeks .
Increase the length of the run little bit on every Sunday /week followed by rest the next day to relax the muscles .Most people do not cool down slowly after running, which is very important.
Running as an exercise must only be done 3 days a week for new runner while One day must be kept for cycling.
Keep in mind that squats & compound exercises are the best friends for Runners, this exercise should be done by every runner.
Keep your body hydrated while running else the joints may experience problem.
Eat banana and papaya in your diet, which are the best energy source.
Keep your nutrition and diet in check . Take care of how many calories burned for weight lossby tracking it each week.
Learning throughout my journey
During my morning run, I always use to guide and motivate people whom I met while running. Most people put music in the ear or go with their friends on the walk so that this boring time ( according to them)can be passed easily. This is a false satisfaction for them as they believe that they are taking care of their health but most often it costs them a lot. Never dreamed that for a person like me who found it difficult to run for even 50 meters till the age of 61, will run 21 km marathon within one year. It was one of the best achievement for me that I was the first podium finisher in 21 km Marathon.

अखंडित विश्वास लेकर धीमे धीमे दौड़िये !
दर्द सारे ही भुलाकर,हिमालय से हृदय में
नियंत्रित तूफ़ान लेकर, धीमे धीमे दौड़िये !
जाति,धर्म,प्रदेश,बंधन पर न गौरव कीजिये
मानवी अभिमान लेकर, धीमे धीमे दौड़िये !
जोश आएगा दुबारा , बुझ गए से हृदय में
प्रज्वलित संकल्प लेकर धीमे धीमे दौड़िये !
समय ऐसा आएगा जब फासले थक जाएंगे
दूरियों को नमन कर के, धीमे धीमे दौड़िये !
